Historic Smithfield’s 250th Anniversary Commemoration Essay Contest

Historic Smithfield,  in Blacksburg, Virginia, was established by Col. William Preston and his wife Susanna. This family produced numerous leaders in Virginia and the United States including two Governors of Virginia and many Congressmen. Eventually, lands owned by this family became the grounds of what is now Virginia Tech.

This summer, the descendants of William and Susanna will commemorate Smithfield's beginnings 250 years ago. An essay contest is being sponsored by the Smithfield-Preston Foundation. A United States Savings Bond will be awarded to the winner in the amount of $1,000.

The title for the essay will be the same as the theme of the Commemoration:
"From Deep Roots, Forging a More Inclusive Future". We will be launching a competition amongst middle school students in the New River Valley. Additional materials will be provided with the launch of the contest in January 2024. Essays will be due by March 1, 2024. The winning family will be our guests at the evening banquet on Saturday, July 27th, 2024.

For the Essay Contest:

To help you with your essay, we offer some suggestions. Start with a brief paragraph about Col. William Preston and his role during the American Revolution. Focus the rest of your essay on one of the following options.

1. Pick someone who also lived in the 1770s. How did they contribute toward the fight for freedom?

2.  Discuss someone from your own family who lived in this time.

3.  If your ancestor was enslaved, how did their servitude strengthen the Colonists' efforts toward achieving independence.

Highlight strengths in whomever you choose. Discuss how these personal traits are still important for "Forging a More Inclusive Future".

We are looking for concise and creative ideas. We prefer essays of around 1,000 words.

Good luck!

The date (March has passed to accept essay entries. The winner will be announced in July 2024.
